As the image of Colombia improves in the eyes of international travelers and tourism takes on a bigger role in the economy of the country, the quality of hotels becomes a priority for those in the tourism industry. The cities receiving the majority of tourists – over 10 cities throughout Colombia – all have lodging options of international standards and several franchises for those more comfortable with the familiar. There are, however, plenty of unique hotels set in historical buildings, ranches, residential areas and even protected natural areas that enhance the experience of visiting Colombia. As far as hostels go, there are plenty of affordable options in urban areas, prices averaging at about $10 for a shared room. A great deal of people staying at hostels are university students – some major institutions don’t have housing – who have not been able to find a host family to stay with.
