Hospitals and Pharmacies in Colombia - Info. Colombia

Major Colombian cities have adequate general and pediatric hospitals. Rural areas have only basic medical facilities. In Bogotá, many travelers choose to go to the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (Ca. 119, 9-33. Tel: 1-603-0303.) Another good option in the capital is the Clínica Del Country (Cra. 16, 82-57. Tel: 1-530-0470/530-1270. URL: www.clinicadelcountry.com).

Several well-equipped hospitals are on the Caribbean coast. In Cartagena are Hospital Bocagrande (Cra. 6 and Ca. 5, Bocagrande. Tel: 5-665-5270) and Hospital Naval (Cra. 2, 14-10, Bocagrande. Tel: 5-655-5759.) In Barranquilla, they are Clínica del Caribe (Ca. 80, 49C-65. Tel: 5-356-4861, URL: www.clinicadelcaribe.com), Clínica La Asunción (Ca. 70B, 41-93. Tel: 5-368-1148, URL: www.clinicalaasuncion.com) and Clínica Bautista (Cra. 38, 71-10. Tel: 5-360-2200, URL: www.clinicabautista.org). AMI (Asistencia Medica Inmediata; URL: www. ami-sap.dioestudio.com), a medical service in Barranquilla and Cartagena, provides ambulance service, 24-hour house calls, pharmacy service and blood work.

Should a life-threatening medical problem arise, you may have to be evacuated to a country with more developed facilities. Check with your health insurance provider to make sure you are covered should this occur.

Pharmacy chains recommended by the U.S. embassy in Bogotá include Cafam, Colsubsidio, Olímpica and Sideral; most of these are connected to major supermarkets and all offer delivery service. Often many pharmacies are near hospitals, as well. In some parts of Colombia, pharmacies follow the de turno system, in which one is assigned to be open for off-hour emergencies.

It is important to note that while ‚Äúmedical tourism‚ÄĚ has become increasingly popular in Colombia, (particularly elective, aesthetic surgeries) these operations are inherently dangerous. Should you choose to undergo this kind of procedure in Colombia, be sure to thoroughly investigate the facilities and your surgeon beforehand.
