Though adequate medical care is available in Colombia’s major cities, it can be more difficult to obtain if you stray from these hubs. In the capital city of Bogotà, many travelers choose to go to the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (Calle 119 No. 9-33, Bogotá; tel. 571-603-0303.) Another good option in Bogotà is the Clinica Del Country (Carrera 16 No. 82-57, Bogotá; tel. 571-530-0470, 530-1270; website http://www.clinicadelcountry.com).
Several other well-appointed hospitals also exist in Cartagena and Barranquilla. In Cartagena: Medihelp Services, (phone: 575- 665-2255); Bocagrande Hospital, (phone 575-665-5270); and Naval Hospital (phone 575-655-5759.) In Barranquilla: Clinica del Caribe, (574-356-4861); Clinica La Asunciòn (574-368-1148); and Clinica Bautista (574-360-2200).
Should a life-threatening medical problem arise, you may have to be evacuated to a country with more developed facilities. Check with your health insurance provider to make sure you are covered should this occur.
It is important to note that while “medical tourism” has become increasingly popular in Colombia, (particularly elective, aesthetic surgeries) these surgeries are inherently dangerous. Should you choose to undergo this kind of procedure in Colombia, be sure to thoroughly investigate the facilities and your surgeon beforehand.
