Photography in Colombia

At the Airport

Take all your film with you in your carry-on luggage. The scanning process for checked luggage will damage your film. Passing your film more than five times through the X-ray can also damage it, but in this unlikely situation you can just ask for a hand check.

What Kind of Film to Buy

Use a film that has an ISO (ASA or sensitivity to light) 100 or 200 for outdoor shooting, 400 for indoor, and 800 or 1000 for near-darkness. Fuji Velvia slide film is known for producing rich colors and good sharpness and contrast —great for vacation photos. The downside: it’s a little pricey, and if you want the pictures in something other than slide format you’ll have to get the slides scanned or scan them yourself.

Colombian Photography

If you are interested in looking at photos and not just taking them, Colombia has a lot to offer. The national photography museum in Bogotá, Fotomuseo (, is an innovative non-profit organization that brings photography to all levels of society through its outdoor exhibitions. It holds five annual street exhibitions of national and international photographs in three different areas of the city, with each exhibit lasting 45 days. In doing this, Fotomuseo hopes to share the value of this art form with the public without elitism or pretension.

The museum holds two other events during the year: Fotomaratón, which brings together the works of professional, amateur and student photographers from Colombia and neighboring countries, and Fotográfica Bogotá, which involves street and gallery exhibitions of work from the most important national and international photographers. This occurs twice a year.

Another important institution is Club Fotográfico MedellĂn (Cámara de Comercio del Poblado, Avenida Oriental 52-82. Tel: 4-444-8822, URL:, Colombia’s oldest photography association. Founded in 1955, the Club organizes exhibitions, conferences, workshops and competitions, including the SalĂłn Colombiano de FotografĂa, probably the nation’s most prestigious photo competition.  The Club’s website includes information about ongoing photography events in the country.

Colombia has produced several notable photographers, among them Leo Matiz, Saúl Orduz Vega, Abdú Eljaiek, Sady González Moreno and Gabriel Carvajal Pérez. (You can view their work at
