Horseback Riding In Colombia - Horseback Riding Info. - Colombia

Horseback riding is a popular sport in Colombia, and the country’s Andes and Llanos provide an ideal climate for equestrian enthusiasts. However, as can be expected, the degree of safety varies from region to region in Colombia.

In the countryside near Popayán, in the southwest department of Cauca, many adventure outfits rent horses and lead guided tours. The Circuito Ancestral, in particular, has a world-famous reputation for its scenic and historical value. East of Popayán, you can visit the ancient rock sculptures of San Agustín on horseback or undertake the adventure of traveling to Otavalo, Ecuador, on a noble beast.

The eastern Llanos are home to Colombian coleo (rodeo), and hosts international competitions for men and women. It is also a well-known destination for horseback riding. Unfortunately, many parts of the region are not the safest.

Many towns have their own equestrian festivals from Christmas to New Year’s Eve. Most notable are the festivities in Cali, where in 2007, drunken residents mistreated the horses to the point that cabalgatas, or horse processions, were canceled. There has been less controversy with traveling horse shows sponsored by local restaurants, which feature actual dancing horses.

A final note: It is the custom to have a shot of the potent aguardiente while on a horse.
