The main attraction of Barichara is this ageless village itself. Most stone-carver talleres are on Carrera 5, near the entrance to the pueblo. Rock isn’t the only material worked here: there are also fique artisans, painters—and cigar makers. To pick up a hand-rolled puro, stop by Gordelia Tabacos for a free tour (weekends and holidays 9 a.m.-noon, 2-4 p.m. Carrera 5 0-84, Tel.: 7-726-7684 / 311-531-4771, E-mail: gerencia@gordelia.com, Web: www.gordelia.com). The Parque para las Artes is another must-do for the culturally minded visitor. To stretch your legs, hike up to the mirador overlooking the Río Suárez canyon, or to Salto de Mico, 30 minutes along the Barichara bluffs, before hitting the camino real to Guane, with an impressive palaeontological and archaeological museum.
