A Walking Tour of Colonial Barichara

Location:
Barichara , Colombia

City Walk

By Lorraine Caputo

The real treasure of Barichara is its pristine colonial architecture. Many come to this pueblo just to wander its flagstone lanes, snapping photos of the white-washed, red-tile-roofed buildings. Start your exploration at the Templo de la Inmaculada Concepción y San Lorenzo on the main square. It is built of local stone carved by the village’s artisans. Walking West on Carrera 7 to the corner of Calle 3, you come to the Capilla de San Juan de Dios with a noteworthy cemetery. South three blocks on Calle 3 to Carrera 4, then left two blocks to Calle 5 brings you to Capilla de San Antonio with a small shaded plazuela. Another 2 blocks South, on Carrera 2, between Calles 5 and 6, is Casa Aquileo Parra. This once-home of a former Colombian President (1876-78) is presently a museum. Returning Northward along Calle 6, you will pass the plaza once more and arrive to Capilla Santa Bárbara, now used for cultural events.
