By Lorraine Caputo

When I heard Bucaramanga has a Calle de los Mariachis, visions of Mexico City's Plaza Garibaldi began crooning in my mind. Well, this ciudad's equivalent isn't, well, quite equivalent. Calle 33 is one of the busiest avenues and there's no street-side cafés to sit and nurse a cerveza while listening to the strolling ensembles. About 5 p.m., in the open windows of upstairs greenrooms, men dress in charro outfits. A trumpet's music waltzes down to the avenida, heard above the rush hour traffic. Those who are ready drink a tinto (coffee), waiting for the night's first customer to hire their services. Twenty conjuntos will be here until 2 a.m., in case you want to serenade a sweet Colombian. Several clubs—Garibaldi, El Venado del Oro and El Sombrero - have mariachi shows beginning at 10 p.m. every night.
