Everyone assures the visitor the town and surrounding countryside are perfectly safe now from the presence of guerrilla and paramilitary forces. There is a fortified Policia Nacional station in the village, and motorcycle patrols secure the highway. Cases of dengue have been reported in Capitanejo. The tap water is not safe to drink.
