History
Cúcuta is a relatively modern city, in Colombia terms, having been founded in 1734. The city played significant roles during the Wars of Independence from Spain. It was captured by Simón Bolívar during his Magdalena campaign of 1813. The first Congress of Grand Colombia (1821), to unite Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, was held in neighboring Villa del Rosario; Bolívar was elected President and General Francisco de Paula Santander Vice President. In 1875 this burg was destroyed by earthquake and subsequently rebuilt. In recent years, Cúcuta has seen much settlement by desplazados, or internal refugees from the war-torn areas in the immediate region.
