By Lorraine Caputo

Like any other port--whether land or waterway--Cúcuta has serious problems with security. The streets bustle with commerce and the constant movement all make it easy for a thief to his/her deed and easily disappear. The entire city is considered to be unsafe after 9 p.m., until well- daybreak. If needing to move at these hours, take a registered taxi. Otherwise, keep your activities to daylight hours.

The bus terminal has a long history of conpersons working the traveler trying to navigate he confusion that reigns therein. Some of the tricks in the past were to have you turn over your valuable for "safe keeping" in the bus office and selling of fake tickets. Do not fall for any of this. It is better to go to the bus office window or the bus driver and by your tickets directly from these personnel.

Recently whenever tensions between Venezuela and Colombia that could affect trade in Cúcuta have flared, the border crossing has seen demonstrations and has even been shut down at times. Keep an eye on the news for any such activities.

The tap water is not safe to drink.
