The traveler will find a broad assortment of types and quality of hotels in Eastern Colombia. Smaller villages have homier, simple hostels. In the rural areas, such as those near Málaga and Villa de Leyva, there are working farms where you can stay for a different kind of experience, and close to Bucaramanga is a Hare Krishna retreat center. In the warmer zones hot water is available only in luxury class accommodations. Most inns’ showers have only room temperature water—though the sun heats the water to a refreshing tepid degree. In popular vacation destinations, like San Gil, Villa de Leyva and Barichara, hotels charge low season and high season prices, and the two prices can vary dramatically from one another. If you insist on going during this time, make reservations well in advance. In the low season you should be able to bargain on the price for a room, particularly if you will be staying for more than a few days. Camping is possible in much of this part of Colombia.
