History of El Cocuy

History

By Lorraine Caputo

El Cocuy was the fourth Spanish town founded in Nuevo Reino de Granada, in 1541 by Captain Gonzalo García Zorro. Before the conquistadors arrived, indigenous Cacique Cocuy (Choqui, Coquy or Cocui) ruled the region.

Once the Spaniards arrived, they used El Cocuy as a base for explorations for El Dorado in the Llanos region. The indigenous were relocated to the warmer, lower regions to work as slaves on farms. El Cocuy was officially declared a residence for Spanish and mestizos in 1720.

In recent decades, El Cocuy and the surrounding region has been affected by Colombia’s civil war. Native sons of El Cocuy include José Santos Gutiérrez, president from 1868-1870, engineer Olimpo Gallo Espinel, who discovered the iron mines at Paz del Río, and painter Roberto Arango.
