Holiday & Fiesta
El Cocuy is a typical village with its share of dates important to its people. A few festivals worth checking out are:
Semana Santa (March-April) — The processions of the devout are quite a display of religious vigor, with extreme fasting and flagellation.
Corpus Christi — This moveable feast, also called Mitaca, falls in June. Cocuyanos (people from El Cocuy) decorate their Parque Principal with arcades of the region’s fruits and a mini zoo.
July 16 — The feast of Virgen del Carmen, the patroness of drivers.
Nuestro Señor de las Misericordias (December 7-12) — El Cocuy honors its patron saint with a horse, sheep and cattle fair, artisan exhibits, bull fight, fireworks, matachines (costume) processions nightly and the obligatory religious services.
Aguinaldos — The novena leading up to Christmas is celebrated with evening processions through El Cocuy’s streets and all-night dancing on the main plaza.
