Restaurants

Eating options in the village of El Cocuy are fairly slim. Some of the hotels have or plan to have restaurants. Evenings stands set up around the central park selling cheese arepas and other comidas rápidas. The Mercado is at Carrera 5 and Calle 5. It and the comedor (dining) section are active weekend mornings, with the principal market day being Friday. The village has several almacenes, or general stores where you can purchase canned goods before heading into the national park.

A traditional dish served only at Christmas and New Years is tamales. These are much different than the Tolimense ones served inmost of Colombia. Here, cornmeal mush is filled with pork, beef, chicken and pork skin (all marinated in herbs, spices and beer), garbanzos, onion and carrot. The tamale is steamed in a hoja de raíz, also called bijao (Calathea lutea).

Nightlife

The village of El Cocuy has few places for letting off steam and partying down. The only real disco is only open on Fridays, after the weekly market closes. Other places are just places to kick back and have a drink. Save up that energy you would otherwise blow on rumbeando, for the treks and climbing you’ll be doing in PNN El Cocuy.
