Getting to and away

By Lorraine Caputo

Buses leave only for El Cocuy and other small nearby villages, and direct for Bogotá. To journey north to Málaga, Bucaramanga, Pamplona or Cúcuta, go first to Capitanejo with a Bogotá- bound bus. In Güicán all bus offices are around the town’s square. Coflonorte / Libertadores and Gacela / Paz del Río are both on Calle 3, and Concorde at Calle 4 and Carrera 4.

The Bogotá bus charges the same fare from Güicán as from El Cocuy. They arrive in this village one hour later from the capital and depart one hour earlier. See El Cocuy for full information.

El Correo, the mail run, is operated by Cootradatil. It leaves thrice daily from Güicán to El Cocuy at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. ($1.30).

To travel along the park access road, you can either arrange an Expreso services with a lodge ($26.50-42 per vehicle) or catch the daily lechero, leaving Güicán at 5:30 a.m. ($1.05 for Colombians, $2.65 for foreigners regardless of distance).
