At La Capilla, about midway on the park road, is a basic puesto de salud, or health post. Hospitals exist in the two main villages, with the better being in Güicán. The nearest airport for emergency medical evacuation is in Málaga.
If a person does not return by the end of his / her permit time, the national park service contacts the Cruz Roja to begin search and rescue operations. The Red Cross then coordinates its team (some of whom have had high-mountain rescue training), local farmers and military to look for the missing visitor. However, don't expect any helicopter rescue if you run into problems.
