San Gil is a safe place to spend a while—just watch out for the motorbikes.
When participating in any extreme sport, assure that the company provides you with proper safety equipment and well-trained guides. Do not swim in the Fonce River, which flows through Parque Gallineral and town, as it has very strong currents; people have drowned in it.
The tap water is chlorinated and said to be okay to partake. As in other parts of lowland Colombia, dengue is present in San Gil; take appropriate precautions.
