It had begun as a holiday crafts fair, but now is a permanent affair. In the large front hall of San Gil’s Casa de la Cultura, 17 Santandereano artesanos —mostly women— bedeck their stalls and tables with their work. To shade yourself during an outing, take along a hat made of palm or plátano (plaintain) leaf. Shod your feet with fique sandals or buy napkin holders, placemats or other item made of this plant fiber (fique) to decorate the dining room table. Of course, there’s also jewelry. If your sweet tooth starts to ache, take home a bag of the honey caramels.
