Sogamoso

(Altitide: 2,569 meters / 8,426 feet, Population: 115,134, Phone Code: 8)

Just an hour east of Tunja, is the Muisca Land of the Sun: Xua Mox or Sogamoso. This mountainous land surrounding Colombia’s largest lake, Lago de Tota, was considered to be a sacred place. The recently excavated Templo del Sol concentrated the sun’s energy. The temple, which had been burnt to the ground by the Spaniards, is today in archaeological and ethnobotanical garden, Museo Arqueológico de Sogamoso.

Much awaits the casual traveler arriving to this seldom-visited corner of the country. A climb up the hill to Catedral Santa Bárbara gives tremendous views over the rolling countryside. Days may be spent to hiking to other villages, wineries or to Laguna de Siscunsí on the páramo. The city has a daily market, which is liveliest on Tuesday and Friday.

Sogamoso celebrates its birthday September 6. In August is the Fiesta del Huan, a recreation of the indigenous sun ceremony. Sogamoso enjoys a spring-like climate with cool evenings.
