In a valley surrounded by high mountains and softly rolling hills is Paipa, 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Tunja and 184 kilometers (114 miles) from Bogotá. Throughout Colombia this town founded in 1568 is renowned for its thermal springs. The public piscinas have large and small pools, as well as 10 individual ones ($5.30). Near Paipa is Lago Sochagota, a man-made lake where you can fish, waterski or enjoy other aquatic sports. There are also several haciendas: El Salitre, three kilometers (1.8 miles) away and Bonza, 10 kilometers (6 miles) down the road.
