The areas around the bus terminal and in the Iglesia del Carmen neighbourhood are said to be dangerous, especially at night. Locals also describe the archaeological site Los Cojines de Zaque as "feo y peligroso"—ugly and dangerous. The Centro Histórico is patrolled by the tourism police and considered very safe. The tap water is not safe to drink.
