Homes of Independence war leaders and of a contemporary artist, religious art to fossils—Villa de Leyva’s museums are bound to have something for your interests.

Casa Museo Antonio Nariño—This once-home of a major Independence leader was

constructed in 1600 (Thursday-Tuesday 8 a.m.-noon, 2-6 p.m. Carrera 9 10-21, Tel.: 8-732-0342. Entry: adults $1.60, students $1.05, children under 12 years $0.50).

Casa Museo Luis Alberto Acuña—Houses the works of this 20th century painter and

muralist (daily 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Carrera 10 12-83, Tel.: 8-732-0422. Entry: adults $1.05, children $0.50).

Museo Prehistórico—Acuña’s small private collection of fossils and related paintings, with

a Jurassic park in the garden (daily 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Calle 13 and Carrera 10. Entry: adults $1.05, children $0.50).

Museo del Arte Religioso del Carmen—Considered one of Colombia’s finest collections of

religious art (Saturday, Sunday, holidays 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 2-5 p.m. Calle 14 10-73, Tel.: 8-732-0214. Entry: adults $0.80, children $0.50).

Casa Museo Ricaurte—Home of a local Independence War hero who fought with Bolívar

(Wednesday-Friday 9 a.m.-noon, 2-5 p.m., Saturday, Sunday, holidays 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 2-6 p.m. Calle 15 8-19, Tel.: 8-732-0876. Entry: adults $0.80, children $0.50).

Museo Paleontológico—An impressive collection of the area’s fossils (Tuesday-Saturday 9

a.m.-noon, 2-5 p.m., Sunday and holidays 9 a.m.-3 p.m., closed Tuesday after Puente. Km 1, Vía Arcabuco / Carrera 9, Tel.: 8-732-0466. Entry: adults $1.30, children $0.50).
