The Churches of Villa de Leyva

Location:
Villa de Leiva , Colombia

Historical Building Types:
Churches

By Lorraine Caputo

The Catedral, on the Plaza Mayor, dates from 1604-1665, and reconstructed after an earthquake in 1845. A few blocks away, Carrera 10 and Calle 14, is the relatively new Iglesia del Carmen (1836-1845), with a stunning side chapel. Another colonial-era iglesia is that of the Carmelitas, built in 1642.

A few of Villa de Leyva’s religious temples have taken on new life. The claustro of San Agustín is now the Asociación Humboldt, an environmental studies research center (Carrera 8, between Calles 13 and 14, Tel.: 8-732-0174). Peek through the door cracks to see ruins of Iglesia de San Francisco (1613); plans are to restore it (Calle 9 and Carrera 8).

Travel Tips: The Catholic churches of Villa de Leyva are open only during mass hours. To visit Asociación Humboldt and see the cloisters of San Agustín, phone first.
