Leticia Services

Tourism
Leticia’s tourism office, Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Desarrolo Productivo (Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m. Ca. 9, 10-86. Tel: 592-5944, URL: www.leticia-amazonas.gov.co), has city maps in English or Spanish as well as information about things to see and do. The Departamento de Fomento Ecoturístico (D.A.F.E.) (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m. Ca. 8, 9-75. Tel: 592-7569, E-mail: fondoprom_amazonas@yahoo.es, URL: www.fondodepromocionamazonas.com) has good pamphlets about ecotourism in Leticia and other parts of Colombia. Other important offices include:

Parque Nacional Natural—Buy your Amacayacu ticket here, or apply to volunteer at one of the region’s national parks (students, professionals or those with national park experience). Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m. Cra. 9, 6-100, 2nd floor. Tel: 592-7124. Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi— Monday-Friday 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Cra. 11, 9-14.

DAS (Colombian immigration)—The office in town only handles extensions (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m. Ca. 9, 9-62. Tel: 592-4877/4878). For entry or exit stamps, go to the office at the airport (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.).

Brazilian consulate
—Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m. Cra. 9a, 13-84. Tel: 592-7384, Fax: 592-8116, E-mail: brvcleticia@yahoo.com.br.

Peruvian consulate
—Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Ca. 11, 5-32. Tel: 592-7204, Fax: 592-7755, E-mail: conperu@telecom.com.co.

Money
Although there are ATMs and exchange houses in town, it is best to come to Leticia prepared with enough money. Changing traveler’s checks is an especially uncertain affair. Banks do not exchange cash; for this, go to a casa de cambio.

Banco de Bogotá (corner of Cra. 10 and Ca. 7) has an ATM that accept Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus, Plus and ATH cards. BBVA (Monday-Friday 8-11:30 a.m. and 2-4:30 p.m. Corner of Cra. 10 and Ca. 7) gives cash advances on Visa, and has an ATM.

Money exchange house can change U.S. dollars, euros, Colombian pesos, Brazilian reais or Peruvian soles. Shop for the best rates, which are slightly better than in Bogotá. Two casas de cambio are: Cambios Alliance 3 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. Cra. 11, 7-50) and Amazonas Cambios (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. Ca. 8, 10-95).

There are also a number of exchange (cambios, truco) stands along Calle 8 past Carrera 11, toward the riverfront and on the lefthand side. For money wiring, Western Union is in Supermercado León (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. Ca. 8, 9-60).

Keeping in Touch

Telecom (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon and 2-5 p.m., Saturday
8:30-11:30 a.m. Cra. 11 and Ca. 9) charges $0.06 per minute for local and $0.12 per minute for national calls. Its rates for international calls are probably the best in town: $0.25 per minute to the U.S. and $0.35 per minute to the U.K.

On average, shops charge $0.12 per minute for local/national calls. To mail postcards, head to the post office (Monday-Friday 8 a.m-noon and 2-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.- noon. Ca. 8, 9-65).

There are plenty of places to use the Internet, especially on Carrera 10, between Calles 11 and 13, and on Calle 9. Surprisingly, many are open until late and almost all have Skype. An hour of Internet use costs around $0.50-1.

Medical
Hospital San Rafael de Leticia (Cra. 10, 13-78. Tel: 592-7075, E-mail: hsanrafael1@telecom.com.co) is the region’s medical facility. There are several pharmacies on Carrera 10, around Calle 8.

Laundry
Lavandería Aseo Total (Monday-Saturday 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Cra. 10, 9-32. Tel: 592-6051) will do your wash according to your specifications. Depending on the type of service (wash, dry, fold and/or iron), the cost is $0.90-1.05 per pound. If you get your duds in early enough, they’ll be ready by the afternoon.

Camera
Leticia has several photo shops. However, there are limited options, so pick up high-speed film prior to your arrival.

Leticolor Digital (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-7 p.m., holidays 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., closed Sunday. Ca. 8, 9-42. Tel: 592-4778, Cel: 311-440-1614, E-mail: camiloandrescastillo@yahoo.es.com) has digital and disposable cameras, digital cards, 400ASA UltraMax Kodak film, batteries, camera cases and develops film.

Foto Reina (Monday-Saturday 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday 7 a.m.-noon and 1-7 p.m. Cra. 10, 8-14. Tel: 592-3882) repairs conventional cameras, and has an assortment of digital camera cards, 100 and 400ASA color film and batteries.
