By Lorraine Caputo

The biggest attraction in the Llanos and Selva is the opportunities to observe wildlife. Caimans, babillas (the more calm-spirited cousin of the caiman), chigüiro (the largest rodent in the world), tití leoncito (the planet’s smallest primate), anaconda, boa and pink dolphins are just a few of the intriguing creatures inhabiting these forests and rivers. Birdwatchers are in paradise, with macaws, harpy eagles, ibis, hummingbirds, caracara, águila real and almost a thousand other species of avifauna.

Indigenous villages can be visited, to learn about their culture and to purchase artisan work. In Leticia and Puerto Nariño are annual festivals celebrating the culture of these native peoples. The Llanos has a mestizo culture distinct from other parts of Colombia. Here, Joropo dance and music reigns, with international competitions twice yearly. Another big feature on these plains of vast cattle ranches is the coleo, or rodeo. Be sure to catch one if you can. The Llanos as well offers premier rafting and rock climbing.
