Colombia-Ecuador Border Crossing: San Miguel To Lago Agrio

Several foreign travelers report it is now safer and easy to do the route through Colombia’s Putumayo, at the international bridge at San Miguel and on to Lago Agrio, Ecuador.

Take a bus from Mocoa to the Puente Internacional (International Bridge) at San Miguel (5 hr, $18). DAS (Colombian immigration) is just before the bridge. After completing procedures, cross the bridge into Ecuador and catch transport to Lago Agrio to complete Ecuadorian immigration paperwork (45 min, $1). Begin the trip early in the day, to ensure reaching Mocoa or Lago Agrio in daylight hours. If you need to spend on the Colombian side of the border, La Hormiga is said to be better.

The situation around San Miguel is still a bit touchy. Be sure to check into present conditions before starting out on this route, as the Civil War's Red Zone lurks in the not-too-distant jungle. It was near here that in March 2008, the Colombian forces bombed a FARC base camp.
