Your fly makes a soft plop as it lands in the crystalline water of Río Aguasilencio--Silent Water River--or one of its tributaries. A subtle breeze passes through the trees and grasses, sunlight dapples the landscape. Tonight you will be frying up those tender rainbow trout you catch here. But for now, it is the meditation of casting and waiting for the gentle tug on the line. Perhaps if you are in Paletará some last week of October, you can challenge Colombians at the annual rainbow trout fishing tournement.

Getting There
Coconuco is 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Popayán by paved road, and Paletará 24 kilometers (14.5 miles) further on.

You Need to Bring: Fishing tackle.

Coconuco and Paletará are on the southern border of Parque Nacional Natural Puracé, where you can birdwatch or trek to waterfalls, lagoons, thermal springs and volcanoes. Laguna del Buey and the Cadena Volcánica de Coconuco are reachable from Paletará.
