History
Parque Nacional Natural Puracé was founded in 1961, the first national park in Cauca Department. During the 1990s the guerrilla army Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) used the park as a base camp. The Colombia military, as a response, established bases on Volcán Puracé and other areas to combat the FARC. Since 2002, with the President Uribe's campaign to eradicate the guerrilla movements, Puracé National Park has been cleaned of the forces -- according to reports. After five years of virtually no tourism, Surandina is repairing service infrastructure in the anticipation that visitors will soon return.
