Whereas the Iglesia de San Juan displays one style of medieval architecture, that of Arab-influenced Spain, a few blocks away the Iglesia the Cristo Rey shows us the architecture of northern Europe of the same period. This church, built in the 1930s, is a stunning example of neo-High Gothic architecture. Light through the clerestory and apse windows floods the large, open interior. Quadpartite vaulting crowns the ceiling; but that of the transcept is octpartite with a rose design. The golden altar is like a giant reliquary coffer. All the interior sculpture and stained glass are ombian or Ecuadorian Jesuit artists.
