Barniz de Pasto is an ancient technique practiced in this region since before the Europeans arrived on these shores. The seed of the mapo mapo tree is boiled in water to extract a rubber-like resin that is kneaded until it is flexible, colored with natural dyes, and then applied by hand to carved wood. The Casa del Barniz de Pasto showcases the work of a collective of these artists. The younger generation is choosing indigenous motifs. Traditionally a men's craft, a few women are making inroads, with more delicate designs. The items are surprising affordable, so pick up a memento of your visit to Pasto--or a gift for a loved one.
