Popayán's cathedral is a testament to the clean lines of Roman architecture. The whitewashed exterior is accented only by towering columns with ionic capitals. The interior of this sanctuary is painted ivory, pale blue and light grey with gold details. The barrel vaulting bands are intertwining vines, a gilded rosette adorns their apices. The aisle walls are treated with fleur-de-lis in high relief on the walls, low relief within the span of the arches. Fine silver work is evidenced in the silver sacristy, and the accoutrements of the Virgin of the Apocalypse. A modern screen with a textured gold background, depicting the Immaculate Conception, adorns the altar.
