The Valle del Cauca witnessed intense guerrilla activity for several decades. Travel is safer now under the Uribe patrols of the roads; however, some Colombians still prefer not to travel on the Ipiales-Cali stretch of the Pan-American Highway at night. Within the city of Popayán, take extra care in the market and bridge areas. Not recommended is a visit to Barrio Alfonso López. In the region, the El Tambo area, west of Popayán, has recently experienced FARC, ELN and AUC activity.
