As Colombia’s greatest river, the Magdalena winds 1540 kilometers (924 miles) through an estrecho (narrow) and boils through many canyons before eventually winding up in the Caribbean Sea. You can begin this sojourn with the río, riding on class-II to IV white waters. The most popular course is an 11-kilometer (6.6-mile) run through class II and III rapids, suitable for the whole family. Another route features 30 torrents within 28 kilometers (17 miles). The roughest adventure, for experienced sojourners only, is a 20-kilometer (12-mile) sprint through a canyon, with class III and IV rapids. Two- and three-day excursions can also be arranged. Aptly, the indigenous name for the Magdalena is Guacaayo, meaning River of Tombs.
