The days of the great adventure to San Agustín appear to be over. In years past, many travelers reported their nighttime bus being stopped by FARC guerrillas and the passengers receiving a political lecture. Since early this present millennium the Colombian military has occupied the town, surrounding countryside and roads. In terms of personal safety, it is safe to do at least the closer walks alone; some locals also say the longer hikes (e.g., to Alto de los Ídolos) are also okay.
