The Southern region—Nariño, Cauca and Huila Departments—have three distinct climates. Tumaco and other places along the Pacific coast Tumaco are said to be some of the rainiest on earth. The wettest months are May to July; the driest are April, May and August. Temperatures year-round range from 25º to 35ºC (77º-95ºF). Pasto, Popayán and other population centers in the valley between the Eastern and Central mountain ranges are have four seasons of two distinct types of weather: January to March it is sun and warmth, and again from June to August, when it is also windy.
Invierno, or the rainy season, occurs April and May, and from September to December. Most of this region enjoys spring-like climate year round, though Popayán at a lower altitude is a bit hotter in the verano. The Central mountain range, which includes such attractions as Parque Nacional Natural Puracé, Tierradentro and San Agustín, November, December and January are the best months to visit. The clear weather brings the warmest days, but likewise cold nights. The windiest months are July and August, which are also cold. Rain is common the rest of the year; the wettest months are September to October, and February to March. Temperatures depend on altitude.
