Tierradentro: When to go

Climate & Geography

By Lorraine Caputo

As in other parts of this region, November, December and January are the best months to visit Tierradentro. The clear weather brings warm days, but likewise cold nights. The windiest months are July and August, which are also cold. Rain is common the rest of the year; the wettest months are September-October, and February-March (when rains are heaviest).

Tierradentro is a popular destination for vacationing Colombians at major holiday times, especially in December. At this time lodging will be full; likewise, more services, such as restaurants, will be open.

San Andrés has its patron saint ceremonies in mid-November. In the village of Calderas, one hour from San Andrés, you can catch traditional Nasa (Páez) indigenous music and dance during the Tumbichucue celebration held each year on December 31st. The weekly indigenous markets in Inzá and Belalcazar are both on Saturday, beginning at dawn; Guadalejo's market is on Sunday.
