Barranquilla, Colombia’s principal Caribbean port and capital of Atlántico Department, is midway between Cartagena and Santa Marta on the Troncal del Caribe highway. This city is on the west bank of the Río Magdalena, 22 kilometers (13 mi) from the river’s mouth.

It was a backwater town for several centuries, but in the 19th century it began to rise to international commercial importance. Immigrants arrived from around the world, strongly flavoring the city's ambiance. Barranquilla has a sizable Middle Eastern community, which makes itself evident in commerce, two mosques and the Arabic channels on cable TV. This segment of the population also has its famous sons and daughters, including (most notably) Shakira. Other populations of note are the Afro-Caribbean, which has shaped a number of cultures along the coast, and European immigrants.

Barranquilla, known as El Puerto de Oro de Colombia (Colombia’s Gold Port) or La Arenosa (The Sandy One), is most famous for its pre-Lent Carnival, as well as for its music and dance scenes. But there is much more to the city than parties. From museums and stunning architecture to premier beaches and baseball, there is a vast range of ways to pass the sultry barranquillero days.
