The same engineer that designed Castillo San Felipe de Barajas built this structure to serve as military quarters for the city in the late 18th century. The 23 vaults contained within this yellow building comprised of 46 arcs that were used to lodge military personnel and store ammunition, provisions, and tools. Then later, during the republican era, these vaults were used as jail cells. Today, they have been renovated and now house artisan shops selling Colombian and Caribbean handicrafts and souvenirs.
Las Bóvedas is located at the northern perimeter of San Diego next to Museo de las Fortificaciones. It is open everyday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
