Safety

El Centro and San Diego are well-lit after dark and are safe for tourists. Nonetheless, tourists should always use caution when walking around at night. Some areas in La Matuna and GetsemanĂ are not so well lit. Keep valuables back at your hotel, but carry a photocopy of your passport with you at all times.

Keep an eye on your belongings when sitting in plazas or on the ramparts. Don’t let distractions (like a “stray” soccer ball hitting your leg) let your guard down. Be especially vigilant at holiday times, above all at the bus station.

The street money changers are notorious for ripping off tourists; use only banks or casas de cambio for those transactions. Be wary of iced drinks if you aren’t at a nicer establishment (the ice might be made from non-purified water).
