Most tourists arriving in Cartagena don't venture very far out of the city. But this stretch of Colombia's Caribbean shore is steeped in history and culture. The coast is sculpted with mangroves, islands, mud volcanoes and vast river deltas. Intrepid travelers, though, are studded with Maconda-esque villages, like La Boquilla, as well as those founded by Cimarrons, or escaped African slaves, like San Basilio de Palenque.
