Construction of Las Murallas, the walls protecting Cartagena de Indias, began in 1586 when Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, was hired by the Spanish Crown. They were later fortified by Cristóbal de Roda in 1608, who worked particularly to build the section separating the city from the open sea. From 1631 to 1633, Francisco de Murga worked to further protect the city on the other side, in GetsemanÃ. Repairs after several sieges were made in the late 17th century and early 18th century. Many of the wall’s old canons are still in place, and visitors can walk around the walls themselves to get a taste of Cartagena’s military past. The museum is located next to Las Bóvedas.
