History

By Col

Originally a Miskito Indian fishing territory, then possibly - but as yet unproven – discovered umbus before becoming a Puritan community in 1630 and then pirate lair and home to Henry Morgan, Providencia has seen its fair share of masters.

In mid 17th century after the Puritan project had for better or worse failed, the island fell into Spanish hands but remained ignored by the protectorate in Cartagena. Left to their own devices the descendants of African slaves cemented their identity on Providencia and ensure that its culture remains intact.
