Safety In San Andrés, Providencia And Santa Catalina

San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina are remarkably safe. Mainland Colombia's violence and civil war are absent here. Of course, common sense should be used about flashing money and jewels, and leaving things unattended on the beach. Keep valuables in your hotel's safe.

 

 

The sun can be strong, so cover up or use sun block. Also keep hydrated. Because San Andrés and Providencia are major tourist destinations, there are programs of control and eradication programs against malaria dengue and leptospirosis. Thus, these diseases rarely occur. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended. Tap water in the islands is not potable.

 

When in the sea, footwear while snorkeling or swimming is advised, as coral can be sharp. Shuffle feet to avoid unpleasant encounters with sting rays. Also keep an eye out for jellyfish. Watch for high waves and strong currents.

 

 

Hurricanes occasionally swipe the islands, and so drills are periodically performed. In the event of a storm, follow public authorities' instructions.
