Just because you are traveling on a tight budget doesn’t mean you can’t get a fair dose of the arts while you are in Santa Marta. The city’s cultural centers often present free events.

Banco de la República: Library (open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.); occasional literary readings, concerts and art exhibits; children’s programs (Calle 14 1C-37, Parque Simón Bolívar).

Alianza Francesa: French-language library and reading room; art exhibits; free cinema most Fridays, 7 p.m. (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-noon, 3-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-noon. Calle 12 1C-82, Tel.: 5-423-5971 / 431-6332, E-mail: santamarta@alianzafrancesa.org.co, Web: www.alianzafrancesa.org.co).

Centro Cultural San Juan Nepomuceno: Cultural core of the Universidad del Magdalena, with an art museum, bookstore, literary readings, lectures, concerts, and movies (Tuesday 7 p.m.) (Carrera 2 16-44, Tel.: 5-438-2048, E-mail: centro.cultural@unimagdalena.edu.co, Web: www.unimagdalena.edu.co).

Travel Tips: An art opening, inauguración, can be quite a delicious experience visually and gastronomically. Attending openings and literary readings is a great way to meet the local artist and writer communities.
