Safety in Santa Marta

Traveler Advice Types:
Safety, santa marta

By Lorraine Caputo

In general, Santa Marta is safe. Remember it is a port town and a major tourist destination, so take care of your camera, daypack and other belongings. Watch your stuff on the beaches when you go swimming. Wandering down toward the port gate and old railroad station at anytime of the day or night is a venture during which to keep your eyes peeled. Be careful at night if returning in the wee hours from the bars. There is an active drug scene in the city. At times, police set foreigners up to be arrested.
