The small Arabic community is quite culinarily active in Valledupar; both restaurants and shops will fill your craving for these goodies. Other international cuisines presented include Chinese. Otherwise, look forward to more fine Colombian cooking or pollo broaster. Comidas corrientes run $1.80-3.20. On Carrera 9, especially between Calles 9 and 11, are some very expensive gourmet and fusion-cuisine restaurants.

The city’s most central market, Galería Popular, hustles from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. (between Carreras 7 and 7A, Calles 18A and 18B). The Mercado público is at Carrera 12 and Calle 21. An Olímpica supermarket is conveniently in the heart of the city (Monday-Saturday 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday and holidays 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Carrera 9 and Calle 14).

Nightlife

Despite being the home of Vallenato music, very few nightclubs feature live bands of this genre—or live music at all, for that matter. The majority of establishments have canned music. Yes, and Vallenato is the most common, of course. As in many towns in Colombia, clubs are only open on weekends. The commonest tragos are beer, aguardiente and the liquor associated with Vallenato music, whiskey.
