History

By Richard McColl

Founded in 1935, the original name of Bahía Solano was Puerto Mutis, but throughout time this name fell by the wayside. Original settlers, like with the rest of the Pacific coast, were the Embera Indians, whose territory reaches north into Panama.

Now, the majority of the population is a mix of descendants of African slaves and those who have moved from Medellín about 50 years ago. Those from Medellín came expecting Bahía Solano to explode on the tourist circuit, when there were proposed plans to build the Pan American highway through this area. The plans were changed and the highway’s route effectively has cut Bahía Solano adrift. Both Columbia’s armed forces and guerrillas covet Bahía Solanofor for its strategic geographic location.
