History

By Richard McColl

Founded in the 16th century, Buenaventura was a major world player before the advent of the Panama Canal. Ships to and from the California gold rush would pass through these waters, increasing the city’s importance along the route. Currently Buenaventura is Colombia’s leading port on the Pacific coast and is crucial to bringing in cargo for the surrounding areas, in particular Cali.
