Though the government has made significant progress in recent years in securing the area, safety remains a concern in Chocó. Travel overland from Quibdo to the coast by river is not recommended, and neither is travel from Risaralda in Chocó. The regions of Nuqui, El Valle and Bahia Solano are now safe, although local DAS officers keep a keen eye on goings on, and all tourists coming into the area—especially into Bahia Solano—are expected to register with them. Do not, under any circumstances, become involved with drugs here. If you find a discarded packet, leave it alone and report it immediately to the appropriate authorities. Do not take photos of any military installations or personnel.
